In the world of brie and bratwurst,
vegetarian wasn’t exactly the most happening scene,
in the food business in Europe a decade ago.
But today,
it has definitely come a long way.
From celebrities to fitness experts to the health conscious,
and even complete foodies,
vegan and vegetarian are no longer sorry, dry and boring.
On the contrary a lot of rediscoveries and improvisations,
are being made to make the herbivorous way more exciting and tempting.
Naturally,
restaurants and eateries don’t want to be left behind
when it comes to adapting to changing tastes.
When we checked,
we were not surprised to find a host of European countries,
in the list of the most progressive and welcoming vegetarian countries
in the world.
Here are our favourites,
countries that may take you aback with the detailing,
with which they try to make their customers experience a foodgasm,
with no meat or fish to thrill the palate.
BERLIN, GERMANY
When someone says Germany,
the first thing that comes to mind is their amazing beers and sausages.
It’s a daunting prospect for a vegetarian.
However,
in addition to being known for its
Oktoberfest with all the pretzels and salamis,
Germany takes equal pride,
in having established a very happening and growing vegan scene.
Among its restaurants and cafes that are no less capable,
in giving tough competition to their meat counterparts.
It’s impossible to walk more than three miles
in the country without coming across restaurants and eateries,
and there are many that are taking it.
Up a notch with their vegetarian and vegan dishes.
is one of the most well-known restaurants
offering vegetarian fare followed by ‘Culinary Misfits’,
which is slightly different from the lot as
it specializes in serving the apparently ‘ugly’.
Less appetizing vegetables like three-legged carrots or two-headed potatoes.
That will never make it to supermarkets, with their own aroma and magic.
GREECE
The Greeks eat seasonally,
which is why your salad tastes the most authentic here among all places.
And if the film “My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding” is any reference to go by,
food and Greece share the most intimate relationship since ancient times.
Here, you can start your meal,
with carota (cabbage-carrot salad) and marouli (lettuce salad),
then move on to the spanakopita (spinach pie),
tiropita (cheese pie) and keftedes (fried fritters made from zucchini,
tomatoes and potatoes)
alongside a lip-smacking dip of garlic and cucumber called tzatziki.
The main course offerings vary from artichoke stew to chickpea soup.
And stuffed tomatoes
which are as delicious as any normal chicken soup and pork chips.
They even have fasolada (white bean soup),
which is occasionally referred to as the national dish.
So, rest assured the Greeks are not going to disappoint on the food,
front for any vegetarians and meat eaters alike.
PARIS, FRANCE
The city of love,
the city of art,
the city of passion and the city of cafes,
Paris hardly ever fails to cater.
To any kind of person from any corner of the world.
When it comes to finding comfortable food and amazing beauty
in its nooks and corners.
This is the land of snails and boeuf bourguignon,
as well as that of soft bread and old cheese.
They produce some of the world’s most fresh vegetables.
Their chefs make sure they take full advantage of that.
In their delicious spread at the restaurants.
One of the historic places in Paris,
‘Gentle Gourmet’ started off as a vegan bed and breakfast special eatery,
a one of its kind,
and has now moulded into
a world-class restaurant with ‘delicieux’ as their middle name.
The ‘Bec Jaune‘
is famous for its shredded carrot salad while ‘La Boucherie’
(or The Vegetarian Butcher,
and aptly so!) has emerged as one of the must-go-to fast food centres in the city.
ITALY
The motherland of pizza and pasta has not only taught people to enjoy food,
but also make a statement with the kind of food they produce and serve.
A unique trend in this country known as,
the Aperitivo
is an authentic Italian experience in the northern part where fresh olives,
cheese and onion rings are offered late in the afternoon.
After a hard day’s work with drinks and salad.
On the side for a relaxing time with friends and loved ones.
This practice kind of redefines,
the expression ‘la dolce far niente’ (the sweetness of doing nothing),
with a vegetarian spread to cater to all taste buds.
BARCELONA, SPAIN
Barcelona,
deserves a special mention
for the fact that it declared itself ‘vegetarian-friendly,
a friend of vegan and vegetarian culture’ in March, 2017.
The City Hall even came out with their own vegetarian guide
To help lost vegetarian tourists find the right places for good food.
Residents have also been encouraged to try the vegan way,
an attempt that has seen the,
introduction of ‘meat free Mondays’ in the country.
Along with such noble initiatives,
the Spanish have come up with their own kind of Aperitivo,
called Tapas
where after-work snacks comprising glasses of fresh sangria,
along with patatas bravas (potato wedges) or bread,
with toppings resembling hors d’oeuvres are enjoyed by the locals.
If you thought you have to miss out on,
the world famous paella for being a vegetarian, think again.
The Spanish have come up with their version of vegetarian paella.
To make sure everyone gets to have an authentic Spanish food experience.
VIENNA, AUSTRIA
They say if you’re going to be a vegan in Austria, be so in Vienna.
Among the hundreds of restaurants and take-aways
through its length and breadth,
Vienna boasts of places like the ‘Loving Hut’,
which is an all vegan fast food centre with two outlets, ‘Cuchina’,
which serves,
its vegan breakfast all day on demand and the ‘I Love Veggie Burger’,
where they not only endorse,
the vegan way but also do their part by donating the profits,
to the Austrian Animal Protection Society.

with absolutely no qualms about being vegetarian and,
enjoy everything that this ancient land has to offer.
