Run by Thomas and Cicely Tharakan, Back Woods is an extensive 120 acre Chemmaram estate whose history can be traced back to over 250 years.
Featured in Outlook Traveller for its heritage and for being home to one of the oldest teak plantations in the world, Back Woods will enfold you in Syrian Christian culture, history and cuisine.
However, there are plenty of sights and sounds to savour.
You could explore the plantation itself on bicycle, take a guided tour of the rubber plant or visit the village of Aruvankode for exquisite pottery made from locally sourced clay.
Go slack jawed at the massive Kovilakams with their intricate wooden sculptures and architecture or cool off with a dip in one of the many waterfalls nearby.
The bedrooms still retain a traditional style with red clay floors, high ceilings and large windows.
Most of the furniture in the rooms were built in-house at their rubber wood factory.
They have an attached study with a broadband internet connection which ensures you still remain connected.
From Bangalore it is 300 kilometers to Nilambur by road.
